Christmas in Montreal: A New Beginning for Our Family

Christmas in Montreal in 2022 will always have a special place in my heart. It was our very first holiday season after moving to Quebec, and everything still felt new — the weather, the lifestyle, and the feeling of starting fresh in a place far from what used to feel familiar.

One thing I knew for sure: I wanted our very first Christmas in Montreal to be unforgettable for the kids and for us as a family.

So we decided to visit Illumi in Laval, and honestly… it turned out to be one of the best decisions we ever made.

The Night Snow Fell Like Magic

The moment we arrived, the snow was falling hard — the kind of snow that sticks to your eyelashes and instantly turns your cheeks pink. But instead of ruining the night, the snowfall made everything feel even more magical.

Every light reflected off the snowflakes, making them sparkle like tiny stars falling from the sky. It felt as if Illumi had been designed specifically for that moment — glowing sculptures and colourful lights meeting thick, dreamy snow.

We were bundled up like walking marshmallows, shuffling through the snow and laughing at how wild the weather was… but deep inside, I loved every second of it.

This was truly a Christmas in Montreal moment that I’ll never forget.

Illumi Laval: A Long, Tiring, Beautiful Walk

If you’ve never been to Illumi, imagine stepping into a glowing fairy-tale world where every turn reveals something new and magical.

You’ll find:

✨ Glowing trees
✨ Giant illuminated animals
✨ Colourful pathways
✨ Tunnels of dancing lights
✨ Massive sculptures brighter than the moon

And the walk? Let me be honest… it’s long.

Like “my legs are crying but my heart is happy” long.

But the kids were having the time of their lives — running ahead, shouting “Look at this!” every two minutes. Even with the snow hitting our faces, we were smiling the whole way through. It was exactly the kind of winter adventure that makes Christmas in Montreal feel special.

The Warm-Up Tents That Saved the Night

My favourite part?
The giant warm-up tents scattered throughout the path.

After walking through freezing snow for what felt like forever, stepping inside a warm tent felt like entering heaven. Dozens of families were gathered inside, defrosting their fingers, shaking off snow, and simply enjoying a break from the cold.

We stayed inside for a few minutes each time — just long enough to warm up — and then headed back out to continue our glowing adventure.

Those tents truly saved us. And honestly… they became a core memory of our first Christmas in Montreal. Nothing says “Welcome to Canada!” like alternating between freezing outdoors and warm cozy tents.

Why This Christmas in Montreal Meant So Much to Us

When I look at our Illumi photos today, I can still feel the joy of that night:

📸 Snow everywhere
📸 The kids smiling from ear to ear
📸 Our winter outfits looking cute but exhausted
📸 Lights glowing beautifully behind us
📸 The mix of cold cheeks and warm hearts

Those pictures aren’t just photos — they’re reminders of a time when we were still new to Canada, adjusting to everything while creating beautiful memories together.

This wasn’t just a night at Illumi.
It was the beginning of our family’s traditions in a new place.
It was a moment that helped us feel more at home.
It was the Christmas that made Montreal feel special.

A Christmas in Montreal We Will Treasure Forever

Our first Christmas in Montreal wasn’t perfect in the traditional way. It was snowy, freezing, tiring, and chaotic… but it was also:

❤️ Full of laughter
❤️ Full of adventure
❤️ Full of magic
❤️ Full of love

Illumi gave us a night we’ll always treasure — a reminder that even in the coldest winter, you can find warmth, joy, and memories that stay with you for years.

And that’s exactly what Christmas in Montreal should feel like.
